The Village of Onarga is located in Iroquois
County, Illinois in East Central Illinois along the
Indiana border, 95 miles south of Chicago and 45
miles north of Champaign-Urbana.

The third largest county in Illinois in area, Iroquois
County offers a rich mixture of agriculture,
business, and manufacturing with plenty of really
nice little towns to live in, one of the nicest being
Onarga. Forty miles of Interstate Highway 57 bisect
the county from north to south, and US Routes 24
and 45 cross at Gilman.
Onarga boasts many civic groups: the Onarga
American Legion, the Onarga Lions Club, the
Onarga Chamber of Commerce, The Onarga
Women's Club and the Simple Joys, The Onarga
Music Club, The Princess Onarga Questers and the
Onarga Historical Society.

The Onarga Fire Protection District boasts many
dedicated firemen.

Onarga is blessed with three churches. Trinity
Lutheran Church is located at 611 W. Seminary
Ave. and is led by Pastor Michael Poynter. The
Onarga Christian Church is served by Pastor James
Small and is located at 309 W. Seminary Ave. The
Onarga United Methodist Church is served by Rev.
Liz Reis and is located at 109 E. Seminary Avenue.
Area Catholics attend the Immaculate
Conception/Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission
Catholic Church in Gilman. The parish priest is Fr.
John Baluff who also serves two other Roman
Catholic Congregations.

The Iroquois West Middle School is the only public
school building in Onarga still in use for that
purpose. The building is the former Onarga High
School building. The Iroquois West School District
encompasses the communities of Danforth, Gilman,
Onarga, and Thawville. The building is located at
303 N. Evergreen Ave.

The Onarga Academy is a private not-for-profit
school that is a residential treatment facility for
troubled youth. The services of the school are
limited to 75 male youth ages 8 to 19. The school
uses the facilities of the former Grand Prairie
Seminary, who still owns and manages the property.

Options for parochial education exist in nearby
towns with schools for elementary age youth in
Buckley and Woodworth. A high school, Christ
Lutheran, operates in Buckley and has been
operational since 1997.

The
Onarga Public Library is on West Seminary
Ave. and offers flexible hours and family oriented
services.
