The Onarga Historical Society
The Onarga Historical Society was formed in November,
2006 by a group of Onarga residents dedicated to
collecting and preserving artifacts and memorabilia on
Onarga's rich history.
Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month
at Historic Village Hall on the highway. Our group is
expanding quickly; as of June 15, we already have 55
members. It is very exciting to see so much interest and
so many people eager to preserve Onarga's great
history.
Dues are only $25 for individuals and $40 for couples.
Dues and correspondence should be sent to: The
Onarga Historical Society, P.O. Box 130, Onarga, IL
60955.
Articles about Onarga's history are published
periodically in the "Spotlight on The Onarga Historical
Society" section in the Lone Tree Leader newspaper.
Above is the first display members of the
Onarga Historical Society set up in the
window at Village Hall on Seminary Ave.
The display shows many old wedding
pictures and announcements.
The second display was appropriate for Memorial
Day and was full of documents, pictures and
artifacts from the Civil War up to the present day
War in Iraq.
Onarga Historical Society has created
calendars for 2008 with old Onarga
Canning Factory labels. Calendars are on
sale at Historic Village Hall on Saturday
mornings from 8:00 a.m. to noon.
Please visit the Onarga Academy Coffee
Shop and peruse the many displays the
Onarga Historical Society has.
Above is a picture of "Old Town Hall," currently owned by
the Onarga Academy. The Academy is allowing the
Onarga Historical Society to use part of the first floor as
its home for displays and meetings.
This is the window display for the winter of 2008. It
features pictures from the Onarga ice storm of 1888.
Shown above are the representatives of the first memorials on the new Onarga
Historical Society Memorial plaque. They are Pam Fink, Dode Thorne and Chris
and Mike Ornelas. The nameplates on the plaque read: Glen L. Fink, 2007; Glenn
Rohrbach, 2008; and Glea Thorne, 2008. The original plaque was donated by the
Glen L. Fink family and the engraving was done by Randy and Cheryl Lizzio of
Iroquois Print. The plaque will be on display at Historic Village Hall. Memorial
donations to the Onarga Historical Society are greatly appreciated and all
memorial donations will be proudly displayed for years to come.
The great sign shown above is one of two
that were made by Randy and Cheryl
Lizzio of Iroquois Print. They generously
donated the signs to the Onarga Historical
Society. The sign is two-sided and is
currently in front of Historic Village Hall
where the Society is based. The other sign
is not mounted and is used for various
events and was recently used for the small
Historical Society float during the 4th of
July Parade.
Pam Fink and Cheryl Rabe
enjoyed participating in
Onarga's 4th of July Parade
representing the Onarga
Historical Society.
